Time: Farmers having organic fields typically spend more time tending to their fields. Since there are no easy quick gap solutions off using toxic chemicals. Farmers need to come up with alternative solutions. Many of these include manual time intensive methods of controlling pests and insects.
Organic certification : One of the reasons farmers in India are reluctant to get into the organic bandwagon despite obvious benefits for them, is to spend money for certification and renewal process. For a small farmer having 2 acres of land, it doesn’t make any economic sense for him to do all the hard work and then spend his meager earnings in certifications and renewals.
Labour: Organic farming tends to need more human labour when compared to industrial agriculture.Farms going the organic way typically have a multi-crop environment. Plying machines in this complex world is very challenging.
Cheap Synthetics: There's a long list of known harmful ingredients which are prohibited in the organic world. This means organic producers must find other, less harmful but more expensive alternatives.
Supply & Demand: Currently, consumers flock to cheap poisonous food and the industry is all too glad to give what they demand. More demand in organic food would enable farmers to scale up operations and reduce input costs.
The open secret : There is no denying that organic foods are expensive, but Its only because they have nothing to hide. There are a lot of facts showing that we actually pay more for food coming out of industrial agriculture. In India, our current fertilizer subsidy is the 2nd highest, surpassing our subsidy for oil .India has allocated a whopping 71k crores in subsidy for chemical fertilizer in our current year 2020/21.If these fertilizer costs were added, the so-called efficient & cheap food would not look so inexpensive.
We have not even included the cost to the environment. The toxic fertilizers that affect our cattle, water and land.We rack up higher medical bills eating the food coming out of chemical agriculture. It's doesn’t take a genius to understand that organic farming is far more economically & environmentally sustainable than its toxic counterpart.
